"Touching the Sky"

"NLP cannot be dismissed as just another hustle. Its theoretical underpinnings
represent an ambitious attempt to codify
and synthesize the insights of linguistics,
body language and the study of
communication systems."

Psychology Today

"NLP is the most exciting, innovative
and relevant human technology currently available for personal change and
business success."

Dr Harry Alder

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence
then is not an act, but a habit."

Aristotle

"Gradually, physicists are beginning to
realise that nature, at the atomic level,
does not appear as a mechanical universe composed of fundamental building blocks,
but rather as a network of relations, and
that, ultimately, there are no parts at all in
this interconnected web. Whatever we
call a part is merely a pattern that
has some stability and therefore
captures our attention.
Fritjof Capra

"As a representational system, our bodies
have a similar double capacity. We can
express movements which are the literal response to a particular situation, or create expressions which are more metaphorical,
as in a dance. A state of anxiety, for
instance, may be literally represented
by reproducing the physical effects
that accompany a feeling of anxiety (such
as tensing up the muscle in one's face and shoulders), or figuratively represented by placing one's arms over one's head and
eyes, as if hiding from something
dangerous."
Robert Dilts

"All which is not concrete is metaphoric - clearly, this involves the vast majority of
our everyday experiences. The structure
of the unconscious - easily the most
influential factor in our success in life
- or more correctly said, the relationship
which we have with our unconscious
is easily the most important
factor in our success in life - is
that of metaphor."

John Grinder

NLP Pathways

"NLP is the art and science of manipulating reality"
Steve Saunders

We are the product of our experience. The way we decide to experience things is influenced by the way we interpreted previous experiences. Our ability to give structure to our experience, enables us to change our experience by changing it's structure - but what creates the structure ? The challenge of re-structuring unhelpful memories took NLP into the realms of addressing phobias and traumas. David Grove focused on the power of metaphor to give structure to our experience whereas Richard Bandler created a framework of submodalities and using hypnosis to alter them.

What's interesting about David Grove's work is his insight of the interface that exists between a client's internal and external worlds. A person's mental map mediates perceptions coming from parts of the outside-in and the inside-out. See my Dynamic Change Model. To ensure that the client and not the coach creates the map, the questions asked must be "clean", in the sense that the picturescreated are the client's. The question "What do you want to have happen" does not specify an sensory cue, whereas the question "What do you feel you should do know?" points the mind to kinesthetic thoughts,

Submodalities help us to navigate the deep structure of our experience, but discoveries in the quantum field of physics move us even closer to the metaphysical realm where spirituality meets science. The principles of wholeness and beingness pick up on third generation NLP where the observer can apply the Feldenkrais Method to understand a person's natural abilities to move, think and feel. Also the meta-patterns that link mood to body state are beginning to be understood in ways that give greater credence to the idea of the 'Ontology of the Human Observer' - understanding the complex interelationships that exists between the language, mood and body states that produce our 'Way of Being'.

Clean Language & Symbolic Modelling
This is notably the work of David Grove which involves metaphor or symbolic modelling, inner child recovery, clean space, clean language and intergenerational healing which use "emergence facilitation". David asked the question "Where do people go when they dissociate ?" He discovered that we keep the dissociated life force safe until it is recovered through mechanisms of "emergent facilitation".

RAPSI
This movement proposes that there is a deeper structure to reality - that everything is made of light, and that non-light is caused by the traumas of life. The recovery and release of the light frees a person from isues and helps them move into a state of "authentic excellence". RAPSI is a complete psychotherapy in its own right, where the process of a journey uses the client's own metaphors rather than those taken from an archetypal journey.

Somatic Awareness
Somatic awareness is the mind’s perception of the inner sensations of the body. It provides access to the internal feelings and physiologic events that underlie symptoms. The breath is the most direct way to regulate bodily and related emotional experience. The mind/body response of relaxation has been used to improve the health of thousands of people who suffer from a wide range of conditions and/or symptoms caused or made worse by stress. Individuals are encouraged to use somatic awareness as a guide as to what kinds of changes or adjustments need to be made in one’s relationship with oneself and with others.

Core Transformations

This approach focuses on how people experience the world, right down to their words, gestures and facial expressions. It helps people change unwanted behaviours, healing emotions and reaching goals. It starts with the client identifying the behaviours, feelings and responses they like least about themselves and using them as the basis for a journey to healing and a renewed sense of oneness and peace. It creates powerful transforming states of consciousness - core states that go beyond the scope of traditional NLP which only seeks to manipulate mental states.

Emergence & Uncertainty
Inner Child, Clean Space, Clean Language’ work was based upon the question of “where do people go when they dissociate”? Metaphysical structures keep the dissociated life force safe until it is recovered through “emergent facilitation”. This is the subject of creating precise starting conditions for change. A slightly wrong starting point and the desired outcome does not happen. This is chaos theory in action in humans. The right starting position leads to precision change. Learn this deeper structure of how you and others communicate and how to learn whole-body communication. You can undertake Personal Journeys to develop greater wholeness of being.

Emergence appears to be a pattern that underlies most behaviour. The pattern comprises seven stages. It starts with what one already knows – typically self-referenced which is reinforced from another point of view – often other-referenced.
It involves a philosophical or contextual view and a “wobble” - where doubt is expressed as to the original thought, maybe going back to the roots – where the strength of another world view starts to overcome the initial world view. This literally deconstructs or destroys or counters the original view - a new thought form is expressed.

Gurdjiefs's Way

Gurdjieff's basic teaching is that human life is lived in waking sleep; transcendence of the sleeping state requires a specific inner work, which is practiced in private quiet conditions, and in the midst of life with others. This leads to otherwise inaccessible levels of vitality and awareness.

The Law of Three, lets call it a triad says that there are at any one time 3 forces acting: active force, passive force, and nuetral force. Mostly we think of two forces as, yes and no, ying and yang, though the Tao gives us a glimpse of a triad in the Tao. Third force (context) though present usually is invisible. So lets say you have a situation where pro and con weigh heavily, the third force whether it be your location, music playing, a cafe your at may sway the balance of pro and con. The understanding of his work can only be received by direct contact between teacher and pupil, and by the work of pupils together in organised groups. Under conditions of a special atmosphere of trust that can exist in such a group, people working together learn to face their own inner poverty and confusion. Working in this way, conscience is awakened along with consciousness. Consciousness, Conscience, and Sensation form the tripod upon which an integrated development of human potential must be based.

The first aim is "to awaken", this Teaching tells us that we are currently asleep (or trapped in a prison or hypnotised to believe we are much more wonderful and significant than what we actually are). But this too must be verified in oneself and not accepted as a matter of "faith". To begin to get glimpses of oneself as one truly is and not as one imagines oneself to be is clearly difficult and unpleasant. One often does not like what one sees. Furthermore, there seems a great resistance to efforts to "know thyself". One must be able to bear the inevitable necessary suffering which results from the realization that one does not know oneself, that much of one's life has been lived under illusion and in a dream-like state of sleep.
