Pathways

"The range of what we think and do
is limited by what we fail to notice.
And because we fail to notice
what we fail to notice
there is little we can do
to change
until we notice
how failing to notice
shapes our thoughts and deeds."
R.D Lang

"People are always blaming their
circumstances for what they are.
I don't believe in circumstances. the
people who get on in this world are people
who get up and look for the circumstances
they want, and if they can't find them,
make them."
George Bernard Shaw

"Talk is cheap only if you treat it as cheap.
If you use it well, conversation becomes
your most precious asset. Conversation
goes beyond simply getting information
from A to point B. It's about generating
action through all forms of communication
from speaking and listening to painting
and singing."
Kim H. Krisco

"We don't just need a new map; we need
ways to change the mapmaker"
Ken Wilber

Pathways to Change

"Change is a path made by walking"
Antonio Machado

I offer these "Pathways to Change" as short items or articles written to support a coaching technique or purpose. You may find them thought provoking or of practical help when seeking to make sense of a difficult issue or dilemma you may be facing.

I have written each one from an ontological perspective so that you can make your own distinctions and assessments around what's applicable in your context. Each one contains nuggets of wisdom, or tips for exploring an idea that may offer a different perspective for you to consider. You may want to reflect on them privately or use them as topics for discussion with others.

The world of NLP is constantly changing. There is now talk of 4th, 5th and even 6th Generation NLP being led by discoveries in the new Complexity Sciences such as Quantum Physics and Cognitive Biology. NLP is now embracing metaphor or symbolic modelling, inner child recovery, clean space, clean language and intergenerational healing which all use different forms of "emergence facilitation".

Making and Keeping Commitments
Reneging on one's promises is a clear breach of trust. Failure can be due to any number of good reasons and not so good excuses. If the promise cannot be delivered, one should come clean as soon as possible and be prepared to renegotiate. This confirms the desire to maintain a trusting relationship. Anything else suggests indifference at best and betrayal at worst.

Making distinctions
This idea of distinctions resonates with my belief that learning and change requires a new way of seeing. It's the fact that the way we interpret what we see gives meaning to what we are observing. The more distinctions we can make the more actions are possible. This has a direct bearing on the quality and quantity of results we can deliver. Seeing what others do not see gives us an advantage in being able to balance productivity and peacefulness.

Building trust
Trust provides the basis for our whole 'way of being', what R.D. Lang called our "ontological security" which includes our hopes, fears, expectations and entitlements in relationships with others. We trust that bad things will not happen to us, whilst knowing that they could. We put our faith in the familiar to make our world feel safe. Research shows that there is a connection between low trust and low achievement. Building trust therefore lies at the heart of ontological coaching.
